3D catches up with Dutch house producers 16 Bit Lolitas, playing Chinese Laundry this week.

Many of your fans around the world think of you as royalty of the dance music scene – considering you guys got together in 2003 how does that make you feel and who is dance music royalty to you-
We definitely don’t consider ourselves royalty. We’re not doing this to be big popstar DJs, but mainly because we like music and like bringing music we like to people around the world. Guys like Sasha and John Digweed are the real royalty!

Are there any production/DJ units that you admire and why- Is it rare to find chemistry in a duo and how do you know that it will work with audiences-
There are other duos out there but we just do our own thing and try not to zoom in too deeply on what other people are doing. So we are no experts when it comes to giving an accurate summary of the strong duos that are out there right now. Finding out if something works with audiences is real easy though, just play it in front of an audience!

How do you go about successfully translating the mood of the club onto a studio album-
Just drag and drop the mood of the club onto the studio album creation program and Bob’s your uncle! In this case (the Warung album) we were the studio album creation program and the mood of the club was drag and dropped into our consciousness by having played there regularly. That’s it in a nutshell.

Can you tell us about working on the first ever Warung album and what is your history with the club-

We feel very honoured to do the first ever Warung compilation. We’ve played there a number of times through the years and it just clicked really well. For some strange reason our sound works very well in the warmer countries on this planet, and Brazil is definitely one of them!

Can you describe the album, your own original tracks and how the whole package represents the Warung club experience-

This album is not meant to be exactly like a club gig, it is more an album that carries the warm melodic vibe of a 16BL club night at Warung into a CD that is a bit more relaxing and more created to be a nice listening experience. Our own tracks on the album were also created with Warung in mind as we tried to stay melodic and sometimes almost trancey but keep the energy level and the flow in tact.

You’re in Sydney to play Laundry, any hints on what you’ll be packing in the record bags-
A lot of new music and a small but excellently trimmed bonsai tree!
