British DJs' failure to embrace US hip hop is one of the main reasons why dance music has failed to go mainstream in America, according to Rolling Stone magazine's Jon Pareles.

"British DJs attached themselves, quite lucratively, to the simple bouncy-bouncy of trance instead of joining the rhythmic fray in the wake of hip hop," the "influential American rock critic" told the Guardian this week.

"And I still have hopes that drum & bass, if not some more exotic rhythms, will lead to a next wave of British dance music vertigo."
