A bill being presented to the US Senate on Tuesday Pushed by the RIAA, and backed by several key states, is trying to make the proprietry MP3 format Illegal.

The RIAA says it's because of the difficult nature of enforcing 'Digital Rights Management' or DRM within the compression algorithm.

Their move is also backed by Microsoft and Sony, whom have their own proprietry formats, such as ATRAC and WMA which enable enforcement of DRM.
