New York City authorities are planning to introduce a new 'nightlife licence' for bars and clubs staying open later than 1am, which could devastate the City's entertainment industry, the New York Post reported this week.

Under the proposals, all venues holding more than 75 customers and playing music louder than 90 decibels, will be forced to obtain a 2 year licence, which authorities could instantly revoke for minor offences including over-crowding, underage drinking or customers found with weapons.

"This bill will end up closing New York at 1am, it's no longer going to be the city that never sleeps," David Rabin, president of the New York Nightlife Association told The Post.

"We're united on this - everyone from the little bars to the biggest nightclubs. The best-run bar in the entire universe could not stay open under the conditions in this proposal," he predicted.

The new plan is apparently intended to cope with problems caused by the City's smoking ban, which has forced crowds of revellers onto the streets outside venues. According to reports in local press, Manhattan's newest superclubs are also experiencing significant teething problems, with Junior Vasquez unexpectedly leaving the Sound Factory two weeks ago and Spirit shutting down for January 'because it wasn't doing so hot' (Village Voice).

Victor Calderone's wildy busy night at Crobar was also pulled unexpectedly this weekend (February 7) with both parties issuing vague statements about the currently one off cancellation.
